There were atrocities committed on the Catholic and Protestant sides of this issue. The atrocities of the papacy are often pointed out by Protestants, but Luther himself approved of the squashing of a German peasant uprising that resulted in 100,000 deaths. Calvin and Knox were particularly fond of seeing “heretics” burned at the stake, although Calvin said he would have preferred to see Servetus beheaded…
